[Demography]

[Picture]The residents of the island are from the Iranian and Arab origins who have moved to this region from southern Iranian provinces during the past centuries when commercial activities in the island were at their peak. Farsi and Arabic languages are commonly used in the island. The residents of Kish are dark skinned and their physical characteristics resemble those of the residents of Southern Iranian provinces. The majority of the residents are Moslems form Shi’ite and sunni sects. Many years ago, Kish Island had a limited population and was never close to today’s large community. According to what can be considered as the island’s first available census-- taken in 1956 -- showed that Kish had a population of 816, whereas two decades later, the figure was at 4311.
A study of the statistics indicates that the development of the central Iranian cities was also instrumental in that migration . However , what is certain is that the declaration of Kish Island as a free trade zone has had a major impact on its population .
A census taken after the 1968 development activities on Kish showed that the population had risen to 2858. This demonstrates the first inclination on the part of people to participate in the island’s new formation . The trend continued and today the population of Kish stands at 12,000. Of this figure, probably 2,500 to 3,000 are the returning local people, and the remainder is made up of the Iranians from other parts of the country.
The comprehensive plan prepared for Kish Island has projected that by the year 2011, the population will surpass the 2,000,000 mark. In order to meet the extensive demand of such large community however, a steady implementation of housing projects is an obvious necessity. And that is why it has been considered by the KFZO as its top priority.
