| Background:
Iran Ferroalloy Industries Company was established in 1986. The company was started with the goal of producing ferrosilicon under the technological supervision of the Norwegian firm, Elkem. In the first phase, more than 2500 tons of machinery and equipment were installed by and under the supervision of the Elkem Company. The company eventually went into production in 1993. When this company became operative, one of the longest-standing dreams of Iran’s metallurgical industries was fulfilled. This company, which is 100% owned by the Bank of Industry and Mine, is now considered the largest producer and exporter of ferrosilicon of Iran. |

Raw Material:
Production of one ton of 75% ferrosilicon, on the average, requires 1900 kilograms of quartz, 700 kilograms of coal, 500 kilograms of coke, 300 kilograms of millscale, 60 kilograms of electrode paste and 10,000 kilowatts of Electrical Energy. |

Methods:
The granulated silica -
25-125mm - along with coal size between 5-15mm, coke, size 5-20mm and millscale
are fed into the smelter. By means of passing Electrical spark between
Electrodes and raw material extremly high temperature is obtained hence
ferrosilica is produced. The different elements are fused into a new material.
This smelting process occurs continously and every two hours, the molten
metal is taped and casted in casting beds. Ferrosilicon is used in the metallurgic industries, steel making and foundry. It is used for the thickening of materials, chemical protection of welding electrodes and in the production of other ferroalloys. Silica fume - or microsilica - is the by product of our ferrosilicon production. Microsilica is used in foundries, in the ceramic, glassware, steel, and cement industries (especially in the production of reinforced concrete having particular specifications) as well as oil and petrochemicals. |

Annual Production:
Iran Ferroalloy Industries produces 20,000 tons of 75% ferrocilicon, 5000 tons of 45%ferrocilicon and 8,000 tons of microsilica as defined by international standards. The output, based on consumer demand, is granulated, packed and delivered.
